Can you make money on Polymarket? Yes, but most people who try don't. Every trade has someone on the other side who thinks you're wrong, and fees, spreads and slippage tilt the odds further against you. Here's how to make money on Polymarket the way experienced traders try to: the best Polymarket trading strategies 2026 has to offer, with the maths and the limits.
How to Make Money on Polymarket: First, the Cost of Every Trade
On the international site, takers pay shares × rate × p × (1 − p) (fee documentation). At 50¢ in a sports market (rate 0.05), that's 1.25¢ per share. If your edge is 2¢, fees take more than half of it. Makers pay nothing. Keep this in mind for every strategy below; details in Polymarket fees.
1. Research-based trading
Buy when you believe the true probability is higher than the price; sell (or buy NO) when it's lower.
Worked example
A market trades at 40¢. Your research says 50%. Expected value per share = 0.50 − 0.40 = 10¢ before fees. After a ~1.2¢ taker fee, about 8.8¢. That's a good trade — if your 50% is right.
The hard part is having information or analysis the market hasn't priced. Use expected value and keep a record of your predictions to see if your estimates beat the market over time.
2. Market making with rewards
Post limit orders on both sides and earn the spread. As a maker you pay no fees and can collect:
- maker rebates — 15-25% of taker fees;
- liquidity rewards — daily pools for tight, two-sided quotes.
The risk
When news hits, your resting orders get filled at prices that are suddenly wrong. See Polymarket rewards and market making.
3. Arbitrage and negative risk
Arbitrage means buying related outcomes that together cost less than $1 (or selling above $1). In negative risk markets all outcomes of an event are linked, so the YES prices should sum to about $1.00. When they don't, a gap appears. In practice gaps are small, disappear in seconds and are eaten by fees. Cross-platform arbitrage with Kalshi adds different rules and resolution risk — see prediction market arbitrage.
4. Quantitative models
Quantitative traders build models from polls, sports statistics or on-chain data and trade the difference between model and price. Automated tools can execute faster — see trading bots. Models can be confidently wrong, especially on rare events.
5. Reduce costs with rebates
Since May 2026, active takers can earn tiered taker rebates from 3% to 50% based on 30-day volume. Rebates don't create an edge on their own; they only make a real edge go further.
Risk management: the strategy that matters most
- Size positions with a fraction of the Kelly criterion (background on the formula), never all-in.
- Keep a bankroll you can afford to lose — see bankroll management.
- Avoid the classic traps in common mistakes: chasing losses, trading illiquid markets, ignoring the rules.
How much money can you make on Polymarket?
There's no typical number. Reddit threads and leaderboards show the biggest winners, not the average. Survivorship bias makes profits look common; the losing accounts don't post screenshots.
